Jaquain Sloan

No stranger to low notes, bassoonist/contrabassoonist Jaquain Sloan enjoys making the ground rumble when in performances. Known for his sweet singing tone, Jaquain is making his name known along the east coast through performances as a soloist and with large ensembles and chamber groups. 

 

Jaquain currently performs with a number of ensembles as principal bassoon for the Peabody, and Occasional Symphonies, and Conductors Orchestra. Jaquain previously performed as principal with the Concert,  and Modern Orchestras of the Peabody Conservatory, and of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts Symphony Orchestra. Jaquain has also performed at various music festivals including Brevard Music Center, the New York Summer Music Festival, and also taught at Peabody’s Bassoon Week. 

 

Jaquain began his musical studies at age twelve when he started band in middle school. Originally a percussionist, he found the bassoon at age 15 and was self-taught until transferring to the North Carolina School of the Arts where he studied under the supervision of Saxton Rose during his last year of high school. Now Jaquain’s ease over the bassoon has won him several awards. He was awarded 1st Prize at the Lenoir Community Music Club Competition twice, received the Broyhill Foundation award at Cannon Music Camp which included a full ride to the Camp for the next year, and recieved a scholarship to attend Brevard . 

 

A native of Lenoir, North Carolina, Jaquain is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree in Bassoon Performance at the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University studying under the tutelage of Phillip Kolker. He has also worked with teachers such as Sue Barber, William Ludwig, and Jon Beebe. When Jaquain isn’t practicing he can be found singing with his multi award winning acapella group the “AllNighters” of the Johns Hopkins University.
